Community Engagement

For more than 80 years, Fannie Mae has served communities through our business and volunteerism.

Committed to Community

Fannie Mae employees contribute their time, talent, and resources to support efforts that address some of our nation’s most urgent challenges. While the company focuses on tackling housing-related issues that support our core mission and business, our employees also participate in a wide range of volunteer opportunities with community-based organizations that align with their interests. We provide 10 hours of paid volunteer leave per month to enable them to give back to the community.

Whether through volunteerism or employee giving, our Community Investment and Engagement team makes it possible for our employees to engage in their communities with passion, purpose, and impact.

Serving our communities

Fannie Mae’s SERVE (Serving, Engaged, and Ready to Volunteer Employees) initiative provides an opportunity for our employees to take part in projects that are focused on building resilient homes, safe and healthy communities, and workforce readiness. Our spirit of service is on full display during our annual, month-long SERVE event, during which employees can volunteer individually or as part of a team in various activities such as rebuilding disaster-impacted homes, preparing meals for vulnerable residents, cleaning up local parks, mentoring students, and teaching financial literacy. The coordinated service projects connect our employees to purpose-driven opportunities to engage in their own communities.

Disaster Rebuild Deployments

When natural disasters affect a community, the impact can be significant. With the goal of reducing the time it takes for a family to return to a safe and stable home after a disaster, our Disaster Rebuild Deployment program provides opportunities for our employees to participate in clean-up activities as well as home repairs and rebuild efforts. It is one of only a few corporate community impact programs in the country that invests in the long-term recovery of communities devastated by natural disasters. We provide eligible employees with 37.5 hours of paid disaster relief volunteer leave annually to enable them to serve in disaster-stricken communities.

Get on Board

Nonprofit organizations need a ready pool of energetic, talented, and qualified leaders from diverse backgrounds to help them achieve their goals and meet their clients’ needs. That’s where our Get on Board program comes in. This special training opportunity, designed specifically for Fannie Mae employees, targets both newcomers to board service and those who currently serve on a board but want to better understand their responsibilities. Through a series of interactive training sessions, the program explores best practices utilized by well-run nonprofit boards and provides participants with important information that every current and aspiring board member should know before committing to serve.

Employee giving and matching gifts

We are honored to support the generosity of our employees and encourage them to contribute to a cause or organization of their choice through employee giving. Employees can double the financial impact of their eligible donations through our matching gifts program up to a maximum of $5,000.

Statement regarding grants

On Sept. 13, 2013, Fannie Mae announced the conclusion of its grant-making program. Fannie Mae does not provide or award grants as part of its business, and the Community Investment and Engagement team no longer reviews letters of inquiry or proposals. Fannie Mae continues to actively engage in efforts to foster and support communities through many other vehicles, such as employee volunteerism.
